Amomum (scientific name: Amomum villosum Lour.) is a perennial herb of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae, and the genus Amomum.
The plant can reach a height of 3 meters, with scattered stems; the rhizome creeps along the ground. The middle leaves are long lanceolate, the upper leaves are linear with a tail-like tip, smooth and hairless on both sides. The ligule is semicircular, and the spike-like inflorescence is elliptical, with the main peduncle covered in brown short fuzz; the scales are membranous and elliptical, the bracts are lanceolate and membranous; the small bracts are tubular. The calyx has three shallow teeth at the tip, white, with obovate-oblong lobes. The labellum is round-spoon-shaped, white, and the ovary is covered in white soft hairs. The capsule is elliptical, turning purplish-red when mature and brown when dried. The seeds are polygonal, with a strong aroma and a bitter, cool taste. It blooms from May to June and bears fruit from August to September.
